SkiStar receives award for pioneering fossil-free ski resort

SkiStar has been presented with the industry organisation SLAO's inaugural Sustainability Award in recognition of its ground-breaking pilot project, which aims to establish a fossil-free ski resort in Hammarbybacken.

As a leading player in mountain tourism, SkiStar is committed to continuously eliminate the use of fossil fuels in its operations and activities. Hammarbybacken has served as a pilot project, with the objective of operating the facility exclusively without fossil fuels and subsequently transferring the acquired knowledge to other ski resorts. The objective of this initiative is to reduce SkiStar's climate footprint and promote more sustainable tourism in mountain environments. This initiative forms part of the company's overarching sustainability strategy and represents a tangible step towards a more sustainable future for ski resorts and outdoor activities.

"It is a great privilege to receive this newly established award," states Fanny Sjödin, Head of Sustainability at SkiStar. "It is encouraging to see this project highlighted as proof that a fossil-free ski resort is achievable, and that we can serve as an inspiration to others. It is also important to emphasize that we would never have succeeded without the support of our partners," adds Fanny.

The motivation for the SLAO Sustainability Award is as follows:

As the inaugural recipient of the SLAO Sustainability Award, this year's winner demonstrates that a fossil-free future is achievable in the ski industry.

The winner has demonstrated courage and curiosity by launching a pilot project to run the business completely fossil-free. By using electrified vehicles, including snowmobiles, work vehicles and piste machines, which are powered by 100% renewable energy and have on-site charging, they are taking the first steps towards sustainable operations. This is fully in line with the industry's roadmap for fossil-free competitiveness. Taking on the role of early adopter of new technologies is not straightforward and requires knowledge, determination and financial muscle.

In a parent company that is committed to continuous improvement, the prize winner serves as a testing ground for the entire industry, showcasing the latest in sustainability work, which ranges from litter picking days to international knowledge exchange. It drives local change that has a ripple effect, inspiring change at national and international levels. Furthermore, their willingness and ability to share their experiences with the entire industry is both valuable and exemplary.

We are pleased to announce that the SLAO Sustainability Award has been presented to Hammarbybacken in Stockholm in recognition of their pioneering pilot project aimed at fossil-free ski resorts.
