Press release -

ON A SCREEN NEAR YOU

STAMMA has partnered up with the UK’s best-known cinema advertising contractor Pearl & Dean for a world first, a short film promoting a petition calling for better representation of people who stammer in the media.

The comically off-beat film, Not Just One Day, follows the inner monologue of someone who doesn't believe in petitions, and finds them mostly vague or unrealistic, with the one exception being a petition from STAMMA, which provides a focused and actionable change.

Pearl & Dean will be showing the advertisement in selected cinemas from 18 March until 27nd October, so that it covers International Stammering Awareness Day on 22nd October.

Jane Powell, CEO of STAMMA said. “We believe that this is the first time an advertisement for and on behalf of people who stammer has been shown in cinemas, here or anywhere around the world."

Our recent YouGov* polling revealed that 2% adults said that they had a stammer which would equate to over 100 million people worldwide, including the president of the USA, Joe Biden. Yet in the media, stammering is rarely heard and when it is, it is often portrayed negatively or to comedic effect. Our polling revealed that of the 2% of those who said they had a stammer, 25% of adults said they’d avoid a situation altogether rather talk. It is time to take the lid off the stigma and see and hear people who stammer. There can be no diversity without disfluency.”

The impactful film, directed by Daniel Liakh and voiced by long-standing STAMMA member Paul Roberts, was created by brand and customer experience agency VMLY&R London and London-based film collective Acid News. Both teams had talented people who stammer.

Notes

Polling. All figures, unless otherwise stated, are from YouGov Plc. Total sample size was 6,302 adults in 2021. Fieldwork was undertaken between 19th - 23rd November 2021. The survey was carried out online. The figures have been weighted and are representative of all GB adults (aged 18+).

World population estimate: Based on a world population of 7,900,000,000 with an estimated 28% aged under 18, this would leave 5,688,000,000 adults. 2% of adults would equate to 113,760,000 adults worldwide who stammer.

Our Purpose

We exist to create a world that makes space for stammering. Where it's embraced as just a difference. Where no-one judges your stammer or the way you choose to deal with it. We’ll get there by bringing people together, whether they stammer or not, to propel a movement for change.

We will stand up for and embolden those who stammer, provide support and information, and challenge discrimination wherever we find it. We’ll fight for speech and language therapy services for those want it. No matter how you talk, we're here for you.

Join us and help the public understand that stammering is not a sign of being drunk, dishonest, nervous or weak. It’s simply how some of us talk.
