Guus Kuijer, this year’s recipient of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), is visiting Sweden next week. The Dutch author is coming to Stockholm to take part in a week of events surrounding the award ceremony, including appearances at Kulturhuset and Riksdagsbiblioteket (the parliamentary library). This year’s award week runs from 22 to 29 May.

The recipient or recipients of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA), the world’s largest award for children’s and young adult literature, will be announced on Tuesday 20 March at 1 pm. This year, 184 candidates from 66 countries are nominated.
“Children need art and stories and poems and music as much as they need love and food and fresh air and play,” according to Philip Pullman, 2005 recipient of the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA). The world’s largest award for children’s and young adult literature is turning ten years old in 2012. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) has contributed to raising the status of books for children and young people for a decade now. Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth, Sweden’s Minister for Culture, says:

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was created in 2002 by the Swedish government to promote every child’s right to great stories. This global award is given annually to a person or organisation for their outstanding contribution to children’s and young adult literature. With a prize of five million Swedish kronor, it is the largest award of its kind. Administrated by the Swedish Arts Council.
