Ben Bowen, CEO of The Indigenous Literacy Foundation, shares his tips for teachers and librarians working with multilingual kids:

1. Allow them flexibility and ownership of their journey.
2. Recognize that the ability to tell stories is as important as being able to read them.
3. Encourage them to explore on their own and maintain a positive attitude about it.
4. Focus on what they’re getting right, rather than what they can’t do, and build momentum from there.
5. Acknowledge that there’s no shame in being a slow reader.

What better way to wrap up the award week than with a trip to Astrid Lindgren’s birthplace, Vimmerby, in the province of Småland?

Yesterday, we visited Astrid’s childhood home, Näs, where we were welcomed with a traditional fika featuring cinnamon buns and seven different types of cookies, before receiving a guided tour of the house and the museum. This morning, we had the amazing privilege of strolling around the theme park Astrid Lindgren’s World before opening hours. Of course, we couldn’t resist staying a bit longer after the gates opened to watch the Pippi Longstocking performance!

4. “If I have managed to brighten up even one gloomy childhood – then I’m satisfied.” – quote by Astrid Lindgren.
