Hurtigruten's SeaZero Concept Wins Prestigious Award

Hurtigruten's SeaZero project has won the award for Best Concept Ship Design at the prestigious Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards.

OSLO, Norway (June 19, 2024) – The first renderings of Hurtigruten’s SeaZero project were released almost exactly a year ago, and last night, the initiative was awarded first place in the category of Concept Vessel Design of the Year at the Electric & Hybrid Marine Awards in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

The initiative aims to create the world's most energy-efficient ship. Announced in 2021, the project is currently in its research and development phase, collaborating with partners such as the Norwegian research institute SINTEF and several other partners in the Norwegian maritime industry, including Vard and Brunvoll.

"It is a great honor for us to receive this award as recognition for all the hard work our partners and employees have put into this project so far," said Chief Operating Officer Gerry Larsson-Fedde in Hurtigruten.

Electric & Hybrid Marine Technology International magazine coordinated the awards, which were officiated by a panel of international journalists, consultants, and industry experts.

"While some of the technology we will use is mature, a lot of testing, development, and research is still needed in many areas to reach our goal. This award gives us extra motivation to continue this work," said Larsson-Fedde.

Hurtigruten's concept design includes contra-rotating propellers, air lubrication to reduce water resistance, retractable sails, large batteries, and a range of other state-of-the-art solutions to build a ship that can sail without emissions during normal operation.
