Hydrophobic down can be trusted over time
Natural down has always been the top choice for insulation on arctic mountain expeditions. It supplies the ultimate in lightweight insulation and cannot be replicated synthetically. The structure of down allows air to be trapped between its filaments and warmed by body heat to provide insulation. But down has one obvious Achilles’ heel: it’s susceptible to humidity. If down gets wet, it clumps together. This causes it to lose its loft and insulation since it can no longer trap air effectively. Untreated down is sensitive to water and sweat. And wet down gear accelerates cooling, gain weight, and the loss of breathability. Ultra-hydrophobic down is changing the game. Haglöfs’ H down has been developed to be water resistant and

Haglöfs is proudly partnered with the leading hydrophobic down manufacturer Nikwax for the production of all their H Platinum Down products. The NHD+ is setting a new standard in high performance insulation materials, increasing the range and extremity of conditions that down items can be used in. This means you can stay out for longer and trust your garments to keep you warm. In a shake-test, where down is shaken in a canister of water, untreated down becomes soaked in only 20 minutes. The NHD+ is the first and only hydrophobic down to exceed 10,000 minutes of continuous shake time in the industry IDFB 18a Shake Test. That’s a full week—increasing the performance standard by 10 times.

Responsible performance that leaves a lighter footprint
Haglöfs’ H Down has been treated for water resistance, adding durable water repellency to down filaments without compromising its original structure. The treatment is water-based and free from fluorocarbons (PFCs) and other environmentally persistent chemicals. Additionally, all H Down is certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). This helps ensure that no live plucking or force-feeding of the birds occurs in our supply chain.
