Skiable conditions arrived unusually late to Åre, so @tom_olivers was stoked when 30 centimeters of snow landed on the mountains in just a few days between Christmas and New Year. His adventures took him to the backcountry and pistes where fresh snowfall created natural features and small bumps to jump and flow through. “Early season is always special — stoke is high, expectations are low, and it doesn’t take much for a day on skis to feel really good. That’s why I love this place. Åre doesn’t need to be perfect to deliver. When winter finally shows up, it’s more than enough.” 📷️: @niklaswallnerphoto #haglöfs #skiing #outsidersbynature

It’s not so much about how the snow looks, but how it feels. Given the interplay of ever-evolving light in Sweden, it’s often not easy to read the snow by sight when out ski touring. Mountain guide, climber, and skier @mountain_bruce says successfully traversing the snow requires developing the ability to sense and interpret subtle surface changes. “The snow starts falling early, already in December. The days are short then, and the conditions aren’t always great. What’s typical for skiing in Sweden is how much you have to adapt — to the weather, and especially to the light. Not just the length of the days, but the quality of the light throughout the season." “In Scandinavia, we often get this gray mass of clouds rolling in. Whereas in the Alps, when the clouds come in, it snows — and then it clears up again. Here, we can have that gray mass for weeks at a time.” “You get really good at skiing in flat light in Sweden. It takes a certain technique — you have to feel the surface. I think you become a very good skier by not being able to see every formation, but feeling them instead. You soften your body, your knees, your legs — your whole body. And you also get really good at making the most of the good days.” #haglöfs #outsidersbynature
