Nothing to see here - striking billboards from STAMMA

To mark the start of the the international conference STAMMAFest Global in Liverpool 24-28th August, STAMMA have launched a series of hard-hitting billboard adverts in Liverpool, working in partnership with JCDecaux UK, showing people mid-stammer with the words, 'Nothing to see here, I just have a stammer.'

People who stammer aren't seen or heard on our media, and when they are they, they're shown either as a comedic device or as someone trying to 'overcome' their stammer. But stammering is just how some people speak.

Jane Powell, CEO of STAMMA said "The effort of producing words for people who stammer can be reflected in their physical gestures or facial expressions. This can take fluent speakers by surprise, but it's time it didn't. It's time to see and hear people who stammer in our media - so that we can help fluent speakers respond better when they see someone stammer, and understand that the stammer is just that. Not a sign of being shy, drunk, dishonest, nervous or weak. It's just a stammer."

The creative concept was the brain child of Daniel Liakh at the agency VMLY&R, and shot by the photographer David Vintiner. The models are all members of STAMMA.

The campaign is part of the 'No Diversity without Disfluency' campaign, launched by STAMMA in October 2021. By ensuring that people are visible and represented on our TV screens and in cinema, STAMMA hopes to tackle the stigma of having a stammer. The advertisements will be displayed in Liverpool as 6-sheets, between the 24th to 28th August.

We exist to create a world that makes space for stammering. Where it's embraced as just a difference. Where no-one judges your stammer or the way you choose to deal with it. We’ll get there by bringing people together, whether they stammer or not, to propel a movement for change.

We will stand up for and embolden those who stammer, provide support and information, and challenge discrimination wherever we find it. We’ll fight for NHS speech and language therapy services for those want it. No matter how you talk, we're here for you.

Join us and help the public understand that stammering is not a sign of being drunk, dishonest, nervous or weak. It’s simply how some of us talk.

International Conference on Stammering 24-28th August

INTERNATIONAL STAMMERING CONFERENCE LIVERPOOL 24th-28th August: “STAMMAFest Global”

STAMMA are holding an international stammering conference at Liverpool University, 24-28 August. A 5-day extravaganza which incorporates STAMMA’s biennial conference and the International Stuttering Association’s (ISA) World Congress. Speakers include actor and podcaster Scroobius Pip, author Hannah Tovey, Poet Owen Sheers and activist Patrick Campbell.

Approximately 8% of children will stammer at some point, commonly starting between the ages of 2-5.

Conference for Parents & Children who stammer, 27th August, Liverpool University

Help us to promote free places for children and parents who are Speech and Language Therapy clients living in Liverpool or Sefton. This one day conference aims to give children and teenagers who stammer a chance to connect with others and provide a space for parents of young people who stammer to share their experiences.

ON A SCREEN NEAR YOU

STAMMA has partnered up with the UK’s best-known cinema advertising contractor Pearl & Dean for a world first, a short film promoting a petition calling for people who stammer to be visibly and authentically portrayed in the media.

It's How We Talk

Founded in 1978, STAMMA, the British Stammering Association, is a national registered charity dedicated to creating a better world for people who stammer. Through its website, stamma.org, helpline and backing of local meetup and self-help groups, STAMMA provides information and support for people who stammer and those living, supporting or working with them. STAMMA is a membership organisation with members taking an active role in the election of trustees and in the strategic direction of the charity.
