Young high fliers raising money for charity

Apprentices at Bury Council are taking to the skies for a tandem sky-dive in aid of a vitally important cause.

Joanne Smith and Katie Flynn work in Adult Care Services, and want to raise awareness of Elder Abuse.

It’s a passionate issue for the two, who chose the topic when representing Bury recently at the annual Young Local Authority of the Year awards – and they so impressed the judges with their presentation that they came runners-up.

Katie (21, from Bury) and Joanne (26, from Ramsbottom) work as apprentice customer support officers at Elmhurst and Spurr House short stay service, and had been with Bury for only five months at the time.

The duo, along with colleague Naomi Smith, will take part in the charity sky-diving competition on 15 June.

Mike Kelly, the council’s chief executive, said: “Special congratulations go to Katie and Joanne who brilliantly represented Bury at the awards. They are a credit to themselves and to Bury, and are splendid ambassadors for our borough. I wish them, and Naomi, every success with their charity sky dive in June.”
