Watch moving commemoration on Holocaust Memorial Day

Residents are invited to tune in to a special service on Thursday (27 Jan) to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

This special ‘virtual’ ceremony, with readings, music and prayers, will be broadcast live online – but also be available for a week afterwards to give as many people as possible to chance to watch it.

A number of faith leaders are taking part including those representing the Islamic, Jewish and Christian faiths, and primary schools have completed work for the event which will be displayed on the night.

The event starts at 7pm – go to https://buryholocaustmemorialevent.vidius.co.uk/- and it will be available at this link for a week after.

Councillor Richard Gold, cabinet member for communities, said: “Holocaust Memorial Day has particular significance in our borough, which has the largest Jewish community in the UK outside London.

“But we also remember the suffering and the victims of genocides across the world: from the atrocities committed in Bosnia and Rwanda to those in Cambodia and Darfur.”

He added: “The theme for Holocaust Memorial Day this year is One Day, when we are invited to choose a date in history and learn from what happened in the hope that there may be One Day in the future with no genocide. We can also learn what action we need to take now, in speaking out against prejudice, hatred and injustice, to build that better future.”
