Thank you for not smoking … Bury’s play areas go smoke free

Bury Council and Bury Public Health have joined forces to protect children from second-hand smoke in formal play areas across the borough.

The move follows the national “Stoptober” campaign and seeks to protect young children at play by discouraging adult from smoking in play areas.

The first “thank you for not smoking” sign is now in place atManchesterRoadParkin Bury. The remaining 64 play areas will follow in phases over the next two months.

Councillor Jane Lewis, cabinet member for leisure, tourism and culture, said: “This voluntary ban in play areas is being put in place for a very good reason - to protect the health and well-being of Bury’s children.

“When healthy young lungs are out at play they shouldn’t have to be exposed to second-hand smoke from others. Passive smoking carries all the same health risks as smoking, and it’s particularly dangerous for children.

“I would appeal to parents and families to support us in promoting this positive campaign.”

Dr Peter Elton, director of Bury Public Health, said: “Children exposed to second-hand smoke are much more likely to be admitted to hospital with chest infections and asthma attacks. Also, the less often children see adults smoking, the less likely they are to smoke when they grow up.

“I hope that both smokers and non-smokers across the borough will support this move to protect the present and future health of our youngsters.”
