Stinky problem attracts harsh fines for pet owners

The council’s head of environmental protection Lorraine Chamberlin said, “We are coming down hard on the dog owners that we manage to catch not clearing up after their dogs but it’s catching them in the act, so to speak, that we need help with. If people can tell us where the fouling is happening, any times, descriptions/names of offending people and dogs, we will organise enforcement patrols. The more information we get the more likely we are to catch those who leave a mess for others to tread in”

The team can also organise school talks and leaflet drops in hotspots. Fixed penalty fines for dog fouling in the Bury area are £50 but if unpaid – prosecution fines can be up to £1000. To report the problem go to http://www.bury.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=1667 or call 0161 253 5353
