Sniffing out illegal tobacco and vapes

Sniffer dogs Skye and Lewis have been sniffing out illicit tobacco hidden away in secret compartments in Bury shops.

They were helping officers from trading standards and licensing on Operation Cece, joined by colleagues from Greater Manchester Police and the immigration service.

The dogs, from the Wagtail company, found 697 packets of cigarettes, 127 packets of hand-rolling tobacco and 707 vapes, with a total street value of £19,300.

Councillor Charlotte Morris, cabinet member for culture, skills and the economy, said: “Getting these products off the streets is important, and we urge residents to report any concerns they have about suspicious behaviour to the authorities.

“These operations serve as a strong deterrent to those involved in the illicit trade of goods, sending a clear message that their actions will not be tolerated. It also highlights our commitment to safeguarding public health and safety and protect consumers from harmful and unregulated products.”
