Right stuff, right bin

Press release -

Right stuff, right bin

Waste collectors in Bury are appealing to the public to put the right stuff in their right bins.

A number of green bin collections – for paper and cardboard – have been rejected at the sorting centre because they have been contaminated with items ranging from food to handbags, a car seat, pillows and even a microwave oven.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, said: “We have managed to keep all our bin collections going, despite the immense pressure on our staff and the increased loads they are picking up every day.

“The contamination in our green bins varies from 8% to 18%, and is close to 20% in the blue bins (glass, metal and plastic), and loads therefore are being rejected.

“Please ensure you recycle properly and put the right stuff in the right bin.

“We understand it is difficult when the household waste and recycling centres (tips) are closed but extra waste such as this should be stored safely at home until they re-open.”

Details of what we do and don’t want in each bin are here: www.bury.gov.uk/aboutyourbins

Residents can also help at this time by:

  • Signing up for email reminders and alerts at www.bury.gov.uk/bincollections (to know when to put bins out and be advised of any changes to collections).
  • Saving space in each bin by flattening or squashing items and squeezing air out of plastic bags.
