Press release -
On your marks, get set for the new Asda Foundation Bury 10K
Bury is to host a major new charity road race that is set to hand a big cash boost to local good causes.
Around 1,000 runners are expected to hit the town’s streets on Sunday 18 September for the first Asda Foundation Bury 10k.
The event – backed by the Bury-based I Will If You Will (IWIYW) fitness movement– is the latest addition to the hugely successful 10k series, supported by the Asda Foundation and organised by Jane Tomlinson’s Run For All.
IWIYW is delivered by Bury Council with Lottery funds from Sport England.
Anyone aged 15 and over can enter the new Bury 10K and entries are open now at www.runforall.com
Full details of the route will be revealed soon, but the course is set to be flat and suitable for all ages and abilities, from beginners just starting out on their fitness journey to experienced fast runners looking for a personal best. It will start and finish at a local landmark and take in some of the town’s historic highlights.
Run For All’s calendar already includes Asda Foundation events in Burnley, Leeds, York, Lincoln, Nottingham and Hull.
Julie Ward, senior manager of the Asda Foundation, said: “Bury will be a fantastic addition to the Asda Foundation 10k Series and we’re very much looking forward to its debut on Sunday 18 September. I hope the whole town will come out to support all of those runners – including Asda colleagues - taking part and raising funds for good causes.”
Pritesh Patel, of I Will If You Will, said: “We are delighted that a new 10k is coming to Bury. It promises to be a fantastic event that will not only bring runners and spectators on to the town’s streets but also, hopefully, raise valuable funds to support the work of some wonderful charities.
“So come on Bury, what you waiting for?Let’s get together, enter with friends and family and show them how it’s done!”
The Asda Foundation 10ks are organised by Run For All, part of the legacy of the late Jane Tomlinson, who raised nearly £2m for charity by tackling a string of gruelling challenges despite being diagnosed with terminal cancer. The Leeds 10k alone has raised more than £2.5m for good causes since its launch in 2007.
Charlie Tatman, Run For All event manager, said: “We are really excited about bringing a new 10k to Bury. A great feature of the Asda Foundation 10ks is the fantastic atmosphere they generate and we are confident Bury will continue that tradition.”

Her family continue to raise funds in her name, and the Jane Tomlinson Appeal has to date raised a massive £7.6m.

About I Will If You Will
I Will If You Will is focused on changing women’s and girls’ behaviours towards taking part in sport and physical activity with the aim of getting more women and girls being more active, more often, and helping improve the health and wellbeing of people in Bury.
It aims to overcome the many practical and emotional barriers to being active, while encouraging women to support each other by joining the I Will If You Will community.
The Phase One campaign (2013–14) was delivered by Bury Council with £2.3 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England. For the Phase Two campaign (2015–16), Sport England has allocated a further £2 million to extend delivery.
The successful IWIYW pilot campaign identified valuable insight and helped develop the foundations for Sport England’s national This Girl Can campaign, which launched in January 2015, as well as Sport England’s practical guide to helping women and girls get active (www.sportengland.org/womenandgirls).
