​New housing on brownfield sites

New affordable homes are to be built on two brownfield sites in Radcliffe and Redvales following a successful council bid for funding.

More than £1 million has been secured from the Brownfield Land Fund to transform derelict areas at School Street and on the former Millwood school site at Fletcher Fold.

Work on preparing the sites is due to start early in the New Year and, when completed, the new homes will play an important part in delivering on the council’s ‘brownfield first’ strategy, its priority to increase affordable housing and in the ongoing Radcliffe regeneration plans.

Councillor Eamonn O'Brien, leader of Bury Council, said: “This money is crucial in allowing us to prepare these locations for much needed affordable housing, so that potential developers are not put off by the cost of remedial works at formerly developed sites.

"When it comes to new houses in Bury, our policy is always ‘brownfield first’ and we are delighted that our bid for funding has been successful. It means that not only will there be much needed new affordable housing but these areas will be improved for all local residents to enjoy, and drive forward our plans to regenerate Radcliffe.”

Cllr O’Brien added: “What’s more, we have submitted bids for funding for a further three sites so that more areas will benefit from new homes on brownfield sites. Not only will all of these projects deliver affordable housing, but we are keen to deliver on our pledge to help tackle the climate emergency by vastly improving the environmental standards of these new builds. Unless we start taking action now, we will not be able to realise our ambitions to be carbon neutral.”
