Mayor pays tribute to our British Empire Medal winners

Two local people who were awarded the British Empire Medal have been praised by the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Dorothy Gunther.

She met Sharon Bannister and Daniel Savage at the award ceremony held this month at Salford Civic Centre.

Sharon has been central to the transformation of Sunnybanks Community Centre and, as director of the research project Through New Eyes, highlighted problems affecting younger members of the North Manchester Jewish Community. She is a keen supporter of Y.O.U. Care, a local charity, and is the President of the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester.

Daniel has given huge support for 20 years to Brookvale Care Home in Prestwich, including young adults with learning and physical disabilities. He has overseen a modernisation programme and has led several very successful fundraising initiatives to help place Brookvale on a secure financial footing. He is also the President of the Manchester Reform Synagogue and has given 18 years’ service to it.

Cllr Gunther said: “Sharon and Daniel have done tremendous work over a long period of time and thoroughly deserve to be recognised for this with the British Empire Medal. It was a pleasure to meet them and hear about how their efforts have benefitted the local community.”
