Made in Bury – rewarding our community heroes

A new community awards scheme has been launched to thank individuals and groups who have made an outstanding contribution to the borough.

Nominations are being sought for the Made in Bury awards and the winners will be presented with their certificates at the annual meeting of Bury Council on Tuesday 14 May.

There are three categories:

* Outstanding Contribution to a Township (single award)

* Young Person and/or Young Person’s Group – outstanding community contribution (25 or under)

* Volunteer of the Year Award

All nominees must live, work, study or volunteer within the borough of Bury.

The deadline for nominations is Monday 6 May, and the decisions will be made by a judging panel chaired by Councillor Sandra Walmsley, cabinet member for community development.

Cllr Walmsley said: “It is important that Bury Council, particularly in the current climate, recognises the hard work and dedication of the many volunteers that tirelessly give up their own time to help improve the lives of the people in our borough. Their input into our communities is priceless and the "Made in Bury - Council Community Awards" is just one small way we can recognise some of our community stalwarts.”

And Cllr Mike Connolly, leader of the council, added: “I hope this will become a major part of our civic calendar and a way of recognising the great work that goes on day in day out by thousands of unsung heroes across our borough.”

For more details, and a nomination form, go to the Made in Bury web pages at www.bury.gov.uk/madeinbury-communityawards or call Cindy Lowthian, communities manager, on 0161 253 5121.
