Let’s act together – Bury Climate Action Community Fund launched to coincide with @COP26

Bury Council has launched a new £100k community fund to back local climate action projects and help Bury on its journey to becoming carbon neutral by 2038.

Grants of up to £15,000 are on offer for community-led projects that will engage local people, inspire behaviour change, and prompt action.

The fund is being launched on the back of the council’s climate emergency declaration and the recently approved Bury Climate Action Strategy and supporting action plan.

Open for bids until 10pm on 30 November, community groups, charities, social enterprises, clubs and societies are encouraged to come forward and submit suitable projects for approval.

Councillor Alan Quinn, Cabinet Member for the Environment and Climate Change said: “We’re launching this fund to coincide with COP26 in Glasgow when climate action is at the forefront of all our minds.

“Leaders from across the world will be coming together to agree urgent action, but it’s not just world leaders who can act. We can all play our part and collectively make a big difference.

“With this fund we want to get lots of locally delivered #OneStepGreener projects underway, benefiting the local environment, our planet, each other and future generations.

“Let’s act together to reduce emissions and create a healthy, safe, resilient, net zero emissions future for our borough.”

To be eligible for funding projects must be delivered within the Borough of Bury, plus contribute to one or more of the following.

• Renewable energy generation or promotion
• Reduced fuel poverty or climate associated risks
• Making residents’ homes more sustainable
• Minimising the everyday impacts our communities have on the environment
• Active travel and/or low-carbon travel
• A reduction in waste, including single use plastic and food waste
• Sustainable buying habits to conserve natural resources
• Adoption of a low-carbon, plant-based diet
• Connecting people with nature and protection of the natural environment.
• Increasing local volunteering and community-led conservation work
