Learn new skills and improve the environment

Volunteers are invited to learn about woodland management at a free one-day course run by experts from Bury Council.

The course takes place on Sunday 3 February at Chesham Local Nature Reserve, and organisers expect this event to be even more successful than last year’s which was over-subscribed.

Jacqui Goggs said: “In response, we have organised another course to give even more people the opportunity to have a go at ‘hands-on’ woodland work such as tree felling, crown lifting and snedding. In the past, people used the woodland for more than just recreation. Woodlands provided fuel for their fire as well as materials to make objects for their homes and gardens.”

David Dutton, the council’s ecology and wildlife officer, will deliver the course thanks to funding from the Bury Accessible Natural Greenspace Project, which in turn is funded by Natural England’s Access to Nature Programme. The BANG Project provides people with ‘hands-on’ opportunities to get involved with the natural environment.

Anyone unable to attend the course can still get experience of woodland management by attending the weekly Sunday afternoon Green Gym sessions at Chesham Local Nature Reserve.

To book a place on woodland management course, or for more information about the Chesham Green Gym, call Jacqui Goggs on 0161 253 7764 or email j.goggs@bury.gov.uk
