It’s here – latest news about Radcliffe Regeneration

Latest details of the multi-million pound regeneration of Radcliffe town centre are being delivered to every home in the town.

Residents are urged to read the new edition of Investing in Radcliffe News, which has all the latest information about what’s coming, and when.

Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, leader of Bury Council, said: The town centre regeneration programme is off to a great start. Since the start of 2024, I’ve been delighted to see Radcliffe taking a huge leap forward on the road to its future regeneration.

“The tired buildings on the site of the £40m Radcliffe Hub have been demolished and the site has been cleared, ready for foundation works to begin very soon.

“At Spring Lane, the location of Radcliffe’s new secondary school, site enabling works are ongoing and the first intake of Year 7 pupils will be welcomed in September 2024.

“And at Redbank Playing Fields, a truly game-changing new 3G football pitch is complete with a new pavilion and car park to be finished by July.

“Good progress is being made too towards bringing 800+ new homes on brownfield land to the town with several schemes either on site, about to start, or being planned.”

During March, contractors will strip out the existing buildings prior to demolition. Land at the front of the site will then be prepared to accommodate the modular buildings that will welcome the first intake of pupils in September 2024. Site preparation and enabling works will begin to the north of the site, ready for the construction of the permanent building which will begin early in the summer.

The future of transport

Under the council’s new transport strategy, there will be further investment to tackle congestion, reduce emissions, and improve air quality. Plans for Radcliffe include better pedestrian and cycle routes to the Metrolink, improved bus services through the Bee Network, a new bridge from Rectory Lane to Milltown Street, along with more public EV charging points, road safety schemes and repairs. Radcliffe Hub - the story so far

A good deal of work has been taking place at the site of the new £40m Radcliffe Hub. Future key stages: Erection of the steel structure and frame for the Hub (summer 2024); Construction of the walls and roof and work to create the tank for the pool (autumn 2024); Installation of the floors, ceilings, partitions and furnishings (winter 2024 to spring 2025); Testing of key systems (summer to autumn 2025); Radcliffe Hub opens (2026).

Most of the buildings in need of demolition have been flattened and the debris has been cleared up. At Radcliffe Market, enabling works are being undertaken in the basement and a new gable wall has been built. At Market Chambers, scaffolding is in place and internal and external repair work is being carried out. Around the construction site, hoardings have been erected with attractive panels installed to improve the appearance and showcase Radcliffe and the community.

The next chapter

In the coming weeks, the former TSB building (next to Radcliffe Market) will be demolished and piling and foundation works will begin, ready for the construction of the hub. Refurbishment of Market Chambers and the Market Basement will also start.

Radcliffe Market will be open throughout the duration of the work and other town centre businesses will be trading as usual too.

800+ new homes on brownfield sites coming to Radcliffe

A range of brownfield sites across Radcliffe are being transformed to regenerate the area and provide attractive, much-needed new homes.

Thanks to a £1.95m grant from the Brownfield Housing Fund, land at York Street is being transformed by Kellen Homes to provide 211 brand new houses, which should be completed by 2026.

Around 400 homes will be built at the former East Lancs Paper Mill site by Morris Homes. Construction on a mix of two, three and four-bedroom houses, and two-bedroom apartments, will begin during winter 2024.

Construction has begun on 132 1-bed and 2-bed apartments at Green Street, the majority of them affordable housing, with ground floor retail/food and beverage units. Completion is expected by 2026.

School Street will welcome 90 two, three and four-bed family homes, and Hive Homes will begin site works this spring.

Whittaker Street - demolition of the disused building will start soon, and the site has potential to provide 25 new homes.

Radcliffe’s game-changing 3G pitch

The new £2.4m 3G pitch at Redbank Playing Fields is now ready, with work to build a new pavilion and car park expected to be complete by July 2024.
