Press release -

Is your polling station good enough?

Bury Council is carrying out a review of all polling districts and places in the borough, and is inviting comments from the public.

The aim is to identify more suitable venues and any possible problems which people might encounter at polling stations when they go to vote.

There are 17 electoral wards in Bury, and each one contains a number of polling districts typically of between 2,000 and 3,000 voters. Polling stations are located in range of suitable public buildings, including church halls and schools.

Poll cards are delivered to all households before an election which show the location of each elector’s polling station.

Mike Kelly, the council’s chief executive and returning officer, said: “We use polling stations that are as accessible as possible, with ramps for wheelchair users wherever needed. We are also trying to restrict the use of schools wherever possible to avoid disruption for pupils and parents.”

The closing date for comments is 31 October. Details of the current arrangements, and how you can comment on them, can be found http://www.bury.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=8652 Alternatively, call 0161 253 6018 or email electoralservices@bury.gov.uk
