Helping groups to help the community

Grants worth £2 million have been awarded to groups who support local residents in a wide variety of ways.

Bury Council has allocated £669,000 for each of the next three years to “third sector” organisations who provide services and meet the council’s priorities of reducing poverty and its effects, supporting our most vulnerable residents, and making Bury a better place to live.

For 2013/14, some 15 groups were awarded funding. These include Bury District Citizens Advice Bureau, Bury Third Sector Development Association, and Bury Metropolitan Arts Association, along with ADAB, Victim Support, Mosses Community Association, Bury Gateway, and Homestart.

Councillor Sandra Walmsley, cabinet member for communities, said: "The third sector in Bury plays a key part in ensuring that our borough is a good place to live in, work and visit. The enormous effort that numerous individuals and groups contribute to supporting our communities is crucial. The wide ranging activity and projects commissioned through this fund reach out to support individuals and families and this is particularly important during these difficult economic times. Bury Council values the work of the third sector and is proud to support it by this significant financial contribution.”
