Daily exercise - don’t hang around is the message

Residents are being reminded of the rules around taking exercise outdoors during the coronavirus outbreak.

As we move into a continued lockdown, the advice from the Government remains the same – stay at home, save the NHS, save lives.

Bury’s parks and open spaces are to be kept open for now so that local people can get their daily exercise, but the advice is not to hang around, meet up with friends or family, have picnics or sunbathe.

Councillor Alan Quinn, Bury Council’s cabinet member for the environment, said: “Lives are at stake here, and you can spread the virus even if you don’t have symptoms.

“It’s essential that everyone sticks to the Government’s advice. You are allowed to exercise outdoors once a day, and only with members of your household, not in groups or to meet other people. Stay local, near to your home, and do not travel unless it’s essential.

“So far the vast majority of people are following the rules, and I’d like to thank residents for their patience and understanding. Considering that last week was the Easter weekend and the weather was fantastic our communities did their bit and stayed local when they went out for their exercise.

“But with the death rate continuing to rise, now is not the time to slacken the restrictions. The sooner we defeat Covid-19, the sooner we can get back to normal life and enjoy the green public spaces Bury has to offer.”
