College students enticed to attractions at the museum

Bury Art Museum has won a grant towards the cost of a project to encourage 16-18 year olds from local colleges to visit the gallery.

Both Bury College and Holy Cross College are within walking distance of the gallery, providing a potentially huge audience. This project will enable the museum to build a lasting relationship with local students, resulting in increased visits.

Using funding of £1,500 from the Eridge Trust, the museum will expand activities such as its Gallery Sketchbook Tours. These help visitors appreciate the building and its history, its collections and works on display. This is complemented by a practical element which includes a Sketchbook talk and presentation and, depending on the nature of the visit, students may make their own sketchbook. The session ends in one collaborative finished piece.

The gallery will offer 15 free workshops, ten for college groups and five for secondary school children, between September 2016 and July 2017. The aim is to reach a minimum of 450 young people aged between 12 and 18.

Colleges can get more information on free tours and workshops by calling 0161 253 5878.

Bury Art Museum is in Moss Street, Bury. It is open Tuesday–Friday (10am to 5pm) and Saturday (10am to 4.30pm). Admission is free and the museum is fully accessible.
