Children in care honoured at awards evening

The successes of children and young people in care were highlighted at a glittering awards evening at the Longfield Suite in Prestwich.

They received certificates for a range of outstanding achievements in education, sports, community action, volunteering and personal progress.  Young people who had progressed to college, university, apprenticeships and employment drew particular praise and recognition.

Guests included the Mayor of Bury, Councillor Joan Grimshaw, along with council leader Cllr Mike Connolly and chief executive Mike Kelly.

The mayor said: “This event was a celebration of the resilience of our young people in achieving great things while faced with many challenges. It also recognised the contribution of carers, extended family and friends in supporting and caring for our children and young people. The positive role that social workers may play in these children’s lives is often overlooked and I pay tribute to them alongside the range of other support services that enable the children to progress and to achieve so much.”

And Cllr Connolly added: “Young people are capable of so many wonderful things, regardless of their background or circumstances – all they need is a chance. It was a real pleasure to attend the awards night and I wish all our young people the very best that life has to offer them.”
