A taste of Yorkshire to celebrate Alan Bennett

Yorkshire tea, parkin, cakes and anecdotes were enjoyed by library visitors keen to celebrate the work of Alan Bennett.

Bury Library was one of just 20 across the country to be chosen to take part in the “An Audience Without Alan Bennett” event, arranged with the publishers of his new book “Keeping On Keeping On” and The Reading Agency.

Kim Griffiths narrated and Peter Fitton was the event’s Alan Bennett stand-in, performing readings from Alan’s new book.

Five more volunteers read further sections from his diary entries, and the man himself appeared in a series of videos. Around £15 was made for The Reading Agency’s Christmas appeal and J. Johnson won a prize donated by Profile Books and Faber & Faber. Two runners-up also won signed bookplates.
