Council leaders' statement on Texas synagogue attack

Statement on the Texas synagogue attack by Cllr Eamonn O'Brien, leader of Bury Council, and Cllr Richard Gold, cabinet member for communities.

"On behalf of the council we state our strongest possible condemnation of the terrorist attack against Jews in a Texas synagogue.

"The outrage occurred overseas, but was committed by a man from near here in the North West of England. It was directed against Jews, causes fear and concern to our own local Jewish community and occurs against a backdrop of widespread anti-Jewish racism directed against the Jewish community in the UK during the course of the last 12 months.

"We have discussed the matter with the police and with the Community Security Trust, which provides security for Jewish communities across the North West and works in close partnership with the council and police.

"We stand united with our Jewish community in opposition to anti-Semitism and will continue to support their security needs to the best of our ability."
