Scandinavian Biopharma’s expansion requires expanded premises

During the pandemic, Scandinavian Biopharma has succeeded in completing and starting several clinical studies, developed an improved formulation for commercial launch and built production capacity together with our contract manufacturers. During the pandemic, the company has hired many new employees in research, clinical development, registration, manufacturing and sales. We continue to grow to achieve our goal of registering the world's first vaccine against diarrhoea caused by the ETEC bacteria for children and adults in endemic countries as well as travellers to high-risk destinations.

“It is great that we are expanding the business so much that we need larger premises. It has been five years since we moved into the area, and the proximity to Hagastaden, Karolinska University Hospital and the surrounding life science cluster makes this a very attractive place for companies like us. The collaboration with Humlegården has worked very well and we are happy to be able to continue the journey together”, says Björn Sjöstrand at CEO Scandinavian Biopharma.

Scandinavian Biopharma has signed a five-year lease with real estate company Humlegården, which is the largest private property owner in the Hagalund business area. The premises in Solna have been expanded by about 160 square meters, so that the total area will be just over 720 square meters. The space is specially adapted for Scandinavian Biopharma's operations and has a tailor-made, state of the art laboratory with a process development unit as well as a modern meeting place.

About Scandinavian Biopharma
Scandinavian Biopharma is a research-based specialty biopharma company determined to give people all over the world a longer and better life. Together with researchers at the University of Gothenburg and the international non-profit organization PATH, Scandinavian Biopharma is developing the first vaccine against ETEC which causes diarrhoea in both travellers and endemic populations.

The development project is mainly funded by the EDCTP programme, which is supported under Horizon 2020, the European Union’s (EU) Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, as well as by PATH and the U.S. Army (USAMMDA).

Scandinavian Biopharma also acts as a distributor for a wide range of specialty biopharma products in Europe with a focus on vaccines and immunoglobulins.

About ETEC
Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, or ETEC, is a major cause of bacterial diarrhoeal disease. ETEC infections are particularly common in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). In children younger than 5 years, it has been estimated that 1.7 billion episodes of diarrhoea occur annually. ETEC represents a major cause of these episodes and accounts for approximately 400 000 deaths among children living in LMICs. In addition, diarrhoea is associated with an increased risk of stunting (i.e. impaired growth and development). Stunting affects cognitive development which might determine a child’s ability to learn, their educational attainment, and future earnings and it also puts children at risk due to other severe infectious diseases.

ETEC is also the leading cause of travellers’ diarrhoea, affecting more than 35 million travellers every year.

About ETVAX®

To date, no vaccine against ETEC exists and ETVAX® is the only ETEC vaccine candidate in late-stage development. The strong immunogenicity and safety data, as well as the promising field efficacy data, clearly distinguish ETVAX® as the lead vaccine candidate against ETEC. Successful development of this vaccine will address a huge unmet medical need for children in LMICs as well as for travellers.

Promising preliminary findings from a Phase 2b study of the oral vaccine ETVAX® against travelers’ diarrhea in Finnish travelers to Benin, West Africa

Encouraging results from a Phase 2b study. The trial enrolled adult volunteers from Finland who travelled to Benin after receiving ETVAX® or placebo. The study results confirm the excellent safety and overall positive immunogenicity of ETVAX®, as well as a significant protective efficacy of 56% against all severe diarrhea, independent of pathogen.

An improved formulation of Scandinavian Bioharmas ETEC vaccine candidate is currently being tested in an immunogenicity bridging study

An improved formulation of Scandinavian Bioharmas ETEC vaccine candidate is currently being tested in an immunogenicity bridging study

An improved user-friendly formulation of the world's most advanced ETEC vaccine candidate, ETVAX®, has been developed to meet commercial requirements. We want to ensure that the new formulation gives rise to immune responses that are non-inferior (i.e. not worse) to the previous formulation of the vaccine that underwent earlier testing. This is done in a phase II double-blinded, randomized study.

The first children have been vaccinated in Scandinavian Biopharma's large Phase IIb study in The Gambia

The first child has been vaccinated in The Gambia with the company's ETEC vaccine candidate, ETVAX®. It is a randomised, placebo-controlled, and double-blind phase IIb study. The study will include about 5,000 children aged 6-23 months. The overall goal of the study is to investigate the protective effect against moderate to severe diarrhoea caused by ETEC over a 1- to 2-year period.
