COMPASS TYP 1933 – A RETRO COMPASS WITH MODERN FEATURES 🧭
➖

In 1933, The Kjellström brothers and Gunnar Tillander invented the first Silva compass.

To honor them, we designed the Compass Typ 1933, inspired by Silva's older compass models from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.

Typ 1933 has a retro look with modern features such as:
🔸 Global compass needle
🔸 Grip-friendly compass ring with rotatable compass housing
🔸 A built-in magnifying lens
🔸 Luminous markings for night navigation

The compass features a detachable red cord and comes in retro packaging with Silva's early logo.

LEARN HOW TO READ A MAP 🗺
➖

Knowing the terrain is key when planning your adventure.
Let us walk you through the basics of map reading:

1. COLOR CODING
Topographic maps are color-coded:
🔵 Blue: water
🟢 Green: forest
⚪️ White: open terrain
⚫️ Black: roads, paths, buildings & objects

2. CONTOUR LINES
Represent the topography or vertical shape of the landscape and help you identify features like mountains, valleys and ridges. The closer the lines, the steeper the slope.

3. LOCAL VARIATIONS
North is always up – on all maps.
Other symbols and features may differ depending on where you are.

4. SCALES
A map is a scaled-down model of reality. Therefore, it is important to understand how it represents distance. Measure the distance with the base plate of your compass and the scale of the map.

5. NORTH
Easiest way to use a map and compass: orient the map towards North. Simply align the map meridians with the compass needle so that “up” on the map is pointing North. Now everything on the map is in the same direction as on the ground. To avoid getting lost: keep the map oriented at all times.

6. TERRAIN OBJECTS
Use significant terrain objects to mark your route: rivers and lakes, hills, fields, paths, roads and power lines.

FIND YOUR COMPASS 🧭

New to navigation?
We recommend that you start with a traditional baseplate compass.

🧭 BASEPLATE COMPASS
The most common type of compass is the baseplate compass.

🔸 Ideal for taking quick bearings.
🔸 Easy to use with the SILVA 1-2-3 technique.

👉 Our most popular baseplate compasses series:
Field – entry level compass
Ranger – easy to handle
Expedition – for advanced users

🧭 SIGHTING COMPASS/MIRROR COMPASS
A sighting compass has a mirror that allows you to view the compass dial and the background at the same time.

🔸 More accurate bearings, as you can keep an eye on the terrain and compass at the same time.
🔸 Great in open terrain, when you must determine direction over long distances.

👉 Our most popular mirror-sighting compasses:
Ranger S
Expedition S.

🧭 WHAT ABOUT THE NEEDLE?
Because the Earth’s magnetic field is different in different places, compasses are balanced for specific zones to eliminate needle drag that can give inaccurate readings. Therefore, you need a compass for your magnetic zone.
If you plan on using your compass when traveling, choose a global needle that works in all magnetic zones.

👉 Our most popular global compasses: Ranger Global and Expedition Global.
