Sustainable fitness with a holistic health approach: How Motosumo supports the UN Sustainable Development Goal #3
More people than ever are struggling with lifestyle-related health challenges such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and mental health issues today. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including heart disease and diabetes, account for 74% of all deaths globally[1]. Obesity rates have more than doubled since 1990, with approximately 16% of adults worldwide classified as obese in 2022 [2]. While these conditions are life-limiting, they are largely preventable.
Motosumo is determined to be part of the solution. By offering an inclusive, community-driven fitness platform that anyone can access, we’re empowering individuals to make exercise a regular part of their lives, whether working out at home, at the gym, or on the go. Motosumo directly supports Target 3.4 of SDG 3: reducing premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by promoting physical activity and mental health awareness.
Our platform is simple yet powerful. With just a stationary bike and a smartphone, anyone can access live, interactive, or on-demand fitness classes that motivate and inspire our users, no matter where they are. Regular physical activity has been proven to prevent and manage NCDs, enhance mental well-being, and improve quality of life [3].
Fitness without barriers
Fitness should be accessible to everyone, not just those with access to expensive, high-tech equipment. The Motosumo platform transforms even the simplest setups into a gateway to high-quality fitness experiences, whether live or on-demand.
“Health and fitness shouldn’t depend on the size of your wallet,” says Kresten Juel Jensen, CEO of Motosumo. “We’re breaking down barriers to make fitness fun, social, and accessible to people everywhere.”
This inclusive model enables users from all walks of life to build long-term exercise habits.
Connecting physical and mental health
The benefits of exercise extend beyond physical fitness. The WHO emphasizes that regular physical activity can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, improve cognitive function, and enhance overall well-being [4]. Other research further supports these benefits. A study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that exercise can be as effective as psychotherapy or medication in treating depression, anxiety, and psychological distress. Similarly, the American Psychological Association (APA) highlights the role of physical activity in reducing stress, boosting mood, and improving cognitive function.
At Motosumo, we bring the benefits of exercise to life through a dynamic, community-driven fitness platform. Our live, interactive classes connect users in real-time with participants worldwide, fostering motivation and a sense of belonging. By combining physical and mental health benefits with the power of community, Motosumo creates a supportive environment that inspires lasting wellness.
“Fitness is more than just physical health - it’s also about mental well-being and the connections we make with other people,” says Kresten Juel Jensen, CEO of Motosumo. “When people feel part of a community, they’re more motivated, happier, and healthier.
Purpose-Driven Campaigns
We also aim to contribute to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being by creating event-based opportunities for our platform users to connect fitness with meaningful causes. Through our global Cycle for Change initiative, we invite our global cycling community to help us positively impact different meaningful social, environmental, or health-based causes. Three of our recent campaigns aligned closely with the objectives of SDG 3:
#TrainForBrains focused on raising awareness and funds for mental health research, addressing challenges like depression and anxiety. This campaign underscores how exercise can be a part of a broader effort to promote mental well-being.
#TrainForPink supported cancer awareness and research, particularly for breast cancer. By engaging with this campaign, participants join a collective effort to improve health outcomes for those affected.
#TrainForMovember focused on raising awareness and funds for men’s health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health challenges. Participants contributed to a shared purpose while improving their physical and mental fitness.
These campaigns reflect our belief that fitness can contribute to a greater purpose. While our role is modest, we are nonetheless proud to help connect our community with causes that align with the broader goals of SDG 3.
Longevity and Sustainability
At the heart of Motosumo’s approach is a commitment to longevity - not just for people but also for the planet. Unlike traditional fitness models, which often rely on frequent equipment upgrades, our platform extends the lifecycle of stationary bikes. This reduces environmental waste while promoting healthy aging, aligning directly with both SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.
“At Motosumo, we’re building a platform that supports long, healthy lives, that’s why our mission remains focussed - our ambition is to make fitness accessible, empowering, and sustainable for everyone, everywhere”, Kresten Juel Jensen ends.
