Faber Castell leads a multi-faceted approach to its sustainability communication

New Sustainability Report 2022/23: Faber-Castell has made progress, particularly in renewable energy and recycled plastic, thus continuing to implement its ambitious sustainability strategy. Creativity is firmly anchored as a driver for change in the company’s global consumer approach.

Stein – "Change needs creativity." – With this motto, Faber-Castell is making a commitment to promote a more sustainable economy, environment, and society. "We firmly believe that innovation and progress require creativity. This is particularly true when it comes to sustainability. That's why we want to foster and unleash creative abilities for finding sustainable solutions," expressed CEO Stefan Leitz.

Faber-Castell has committed itself to ambitious targets and is on track to achieve them, as the figures in the latest report show.

Renewable energy covers 89 percent of Farber-Castell’s energy need

The plan to increase the use of renewable energy has been a great success. The company has been expanding infrastructure to self-produce renewable energy at different production and affiliated sales sites around the globe.

Furthermore, when purchasing energy, Faber-Castell is committed to sourcing from certified, sustainable sources wherever possible. In the 2022/23 fiscal year, the company managed to cover 89 percent (compared to 87 percent in the 2020/21 fiscal year) of its total global energy consumption from renewable energy sources.

At the same time, Faber-Castell is reducing its overall energy use by increasing the energy efficiency during production, with focus on process optimization, investing in more efficient machines and improving facilities.

A continuously increasing proportion of recycled plastic

Faber-Castell is working to continuously reduce its use of conventional plastics by using more environmentally friendly materials for its products and packaging. Since 2016, the company has been producing more and more pens from recycled plastics from industrial production, known as recyclate. The forerunner here is the plant in Austria, where over 55 percent of plastic used is recyclate. The company has already successfully started switching from plastic to cardboard packaging on a global scale.

Sustainability report 2022/23 illustrates multi-faceted commitment

Faber-Castell has also reorganized its sustainability communication. The engagement is communicated to a broad public in a clear and appealing way.

All interested stakeholders can find information on the company's sustainability initiatives and projects in the newly developed and recently published brochure, “Sustainability Insights”. For a well-founded background analysis, the also new publication “Sustainability Details” transparently presents the most current key figures and data.

Dr Susanne Veldung, Senior Manager Sustainability & Brand Equity at Faber-Castell, explains: "We have been reporting on our global sustainability activities since 2009. The topic of sustainability reporting is currently developing very dynamically. On the one hand, we see the need to make our reporting increasingly comprehensive and detailed. However, it is also important to us to present our topics and projects in an accessible way that is clear, straightforward and appealing. That is why we have decided to relaunch our sustainability reporting in the spirit of "Change needs creativity"."

All information and documents relating to sustainability at Faber-Castell can be found on the Sustainability Website https://www.faber-castell.com/corporate/sustainability, which has also been redesigned.
