Dylan Ferrandis Wins First 250MX Title to Make It Two for 2020

October 12, 2020—On October 10, 2020, at Round 9, the final round of the AMA Motocross Championship held at Fox Raceway in Pala, California, the Monster Energy/Star/Yamaha Racing team’s Dylan Ferrandis, who competed in this season’s 250MX class on the YZ250F, took 2nd/5th for 3rd overall in the event to win his first ever AMA Motocross championship title. It was his second title of the year after also lifting the AMA Supercross 250SX West crown.

The 2020 season was originally scheduled to start in May but was postponed until August due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The calendar was shortened from the previous year’s 12 events with 24 motos to only 9 events with 18 motos. Ferrandis got off to a very strong start winning both motos in the opening round, then holding onto the red plate through Round 3 before missing out on the podium at Round 4 and relinquishing it to Honda rival Jeremy Martin. Ferrandis then won all four motos in Rounds 6 and 7 to retake the championship lead before finishing 2nd overall at Round 8, opening an 18 point gap to 2nd ranked Martin heading into the final round.

With the title on the line in the final round, Ferrandis finished 2nd in the first moto to widen the gap to Martin to 22 points. Martin then came back to win the second moto, but after a crash dropped Ferrandis to 9th in the opening laps, he re-mounted to finish 5th which was enough to clinch his first ever 250MX title and second title of the year. He won with a total of 390 points including eight wins, three 2nds and three 3rd place finishes.

Ferrandis’s teammate Shane McElrath took one win, one 2nd and two 3rd place finishes to end up 3rd overall, while teammate Justin Cooper had one win, three 2nds and two 3rd place finishes for 5th overall in what was a very competitive season for the YZ250F riders.

“Winning this U.S. motocross championship is another dream goal accomplished. I really put a lot of work to get it and it was not easy at all. To finish my 250 career with the supercross and motocross championship the same year is so big that I never imagined myself to do it. It’s so awesome. I’m feeling in paradise right now. It was good to race in California close to home. Unfortunately, the track was really tough to ride. I felt strong in Moto 1 and got P2 to put myself in a safe position for the championship. In the second moto, I had a small tip over and was ninth. I came back then rode easy at the end to enjoy those last laps in my 250 career.”

Wil Hahn - Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team Manager

“It was a heck of a day for us! We capped off an amazing year for the entire team with the 250MX Championship! I’m thankful for everyone involved, our riders, our crew, and our sponsors. Everyone works so hard and that hard work paid off.”
