Press invitation: First large wave power generator to be launched in Lysekil

On the 12 March scientists and doctoral students from Uppsala University are installing the first large generator in what will become a full scale wave power farm in Lysekil on the Swedish west coast. Media are hereby welcomed to attend the launch.

“After several years of research it is now time for large-scale realisation of this new energy form, which we think will become one of several obvious choices for covering the future energy needs of society”, says Professor Mats Leijon who has led the development of the technology at Uppsala University since the start in 2002.

“Since the first generator was installed in 2006 we have refined the technology to achieve higher power output. Now we are launching a new generation of wave power generators.”

As a first, the new generator uses a different type of magnet than what is most commonly used in wave power technology. These so called permanent magnets contain rare materials which have become increasingly expensive, as well as having a negative impact on the environment. Instead, the Uppsala researchers use a new type of translator containing ferrite magnets.

For more information about the project, please contact Professor Mats Leijon, mobile no. +46 70 425 09 23.

A number of journalists/photographers can view the launch from a dedicated press boat. To reserve a seat in the press boat, please contact Malin Göteman before 11 March 17.00, mobile no. +46 73 764 80 90. Press representatives who want to come out in the boat must gather at Rosvikstorg in the morning on 12 March. For a more exact time, contact Malin Göteman.

After the launch, on site researcher Boel Ekergård will answer questions.

Financiers of significant importance to the project are: The Swedish Research Council, Sten A Olssons Stiftelse för Forskning och Kultur, Kjell och Märta Beijers Stiftelse, the Swedish Centre for Renewable Electric Energy Conversion II financed by the Swedish Energy Agency, Uppsala University, Statkraft, VINNOVA, J. Gust. Richert stiftelse, Draka Kabel, Engkvists forskningsstiftelse, Ångpanneföreningens forskningsstiftelse, STandUP, Wallenius stiftelse, Seabased.
