Lark species

Shore Lark Eremophila alpestris is closely related to Short-toed Lark Calandrella brachydactyla, from which it is markedly different in all respects. On the other hand, the Asian Short-toed Lark Alaudala cheleensis and the Short-toed Lark, which are very similar in appearance and sound, are not closely related to each other (unlike what was previously assumed). The Cape Long-billed Lark Certhilauda curvirostris, found in South Africa, is very distantly related to the Dupont’s Lark Chersophilus duponti of the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa, despite the striking similarity in appearance—an example of convergent evolution, likely due to their similar lifestyles.
