Florida Student’s 9/11 Film To Be Screened on National Day of Service, Available For School Viewing

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. -- September 5th, 2012 -- “Reconciliation”, an award-winning documentary which tells the stories of one Florida’s school connection to 9/11, is being provided to schools across the country for viewing.

On the 11th anniversary of the collapse of the Twin Towers, the film will be shown for the first time to the students at Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, where the subjects of the film have ties to.

Lance Oppenheim, the film’s director and a Pine Crest student, says he is honored to show the film to his peers and hopes to take what for them is a historical event and turn it into a living breathing memory.

“Obviously most of my classmates are too young to have a direct emotional connection to the events of September 11th, so this film is my attempt to share the first hand stories of three particular people."

Youth Leadership Broward, a non-profit training organization also plans to show the film at an event honoring the National Day of Service, which is a tribute to the charitable works performed in honor of the victims of 9/11.

Oppenheim was commissioned with making the film for last year’s National Day of Service after receiving a grant by The Hands On Network, one of the largest volunteer networks in the country.

It was also supported by GenernationOn, a global youth service organization.

In addition The Opp-Guide, a non-profit committed to connecting America’s youth with service opportunities, for which Oppenheim serves as President, co-produced the film.

Oppenheim and the Opp-Guide encourages schools across the country to use the film as a teaching tool for other schools on September 11th, so they can honor the victims by promoting the National Day of Service.

“Despite the grim subject matter, I found an amazing inspirational theme connected all the stories told during the film,” Oppenheim said, “As tough as they may be to hear, I feel it is important for my generation to take time out to remember.” 

The film is available for download on the video-sharing site Vimeo, where it has been viewed over 2,600 times since premiering on the site.

“Reconciliation” was first publicly screened last April at the Wallabout Film Festival, a student-run film festival organized by the Pratt Institute in New York City. 

It was also honored as the Best Documentary at the Santa Monica Teen Film Festival, and received honorable mention at the Student Emmy Awards held by the Suncoast Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. 

It has also been screened at the Seattle True Independent Film Festival.
