Grand Slam at the ENnies for Tales from the Loop RPG

Tales from the Loop RPG by Free League Publishing won no less than five Gold ENnies at the recently concluded Gencon 2017 convention. The tabletop roleplaying game, based on acclaimed scifi artist Simon Stålenhag's artbook with the same name, was named Best Game and Product of the Year.

Tales from the Loop RPG won the Gold award in all five categories it was nominated in:

  • Best Game
  • Best Setting
  • Best Interior Art
  • Best Writing
  • Product of the Year

This is the first time a Swedish game has won a Gold ENnie. The award, the "Oscars" of roleplaying games, was created in 2001 and is presented each year at Gencon, the biggest event of all in tabletop gaming. In 2015, Free League won a Silver ENnie for Best Rules for Mutant: Year Zero, the publishers first internation game.

For its international ventures, Free League has a distribution partnership with British publisher Modiphius Entertainment.

The Tales from the Loop RPG, released this April, is based on scifi artist Simon Stålenhag’s paintings of Swedish 1980s suburbia, populated by fantastic machines and strange beasts. Stålenhag’s portrayal of a childhood against a backdrop of old Volvo cars and coveralls, combined with strange and mystical machines, creates a unique atmosphere that is both instantly recognizable and utterly alien.

In the Tales from the Loop RPG, players take the roles of teenagers solving Mysteries connected to the huge particle accelerator called the Loop. Players choose between character types such as the Bookworm, the Troublemaker, the Popular Kid and the Weirdo. Everyday Life is full of nagging parents, never-ending homework and classmates bullying and being bullied.

The core rulebook contains four complete Mysteries to play and a campaign setting based on the Mälaren Islands outside of Stockholm. In addition, the core rulebook includes an alternative campaign setting in a US location based on Boulder City, Nevada. The US setting text is written by the award-winning game writer and author Matt Forbeck.

The Tales from the Loop RPG is Free League Publishing's third English language RPG. The first one, post-apocalyptic Mutant: Year Zero, has been translated into English, French, Spanish and Portuguese, and a German version is forthcoming. The second international game, scifi adventure Coriolis - The Third Horizon, was awarded a Judge's Spotlight Award at Gencon.

Apart from RPGs, Free League publishes fiction and artbooks, among them Simon Stålenhag's next title The Electric State, due to be released in December.
