Umicore laboratory instead of chemistry lab

The visit to Umicore Galvanotechnik GmbH by the advanced chemistry course of the 11th grade of the Franziskus-Gymnasium Mutlangen was an exciting encounter between industry and school. The students, who were accompanied by their teacher Dr Joerg Bauchert, were warmly welcomed by Steffen Barth, head of the human resources department, and Karl Hieber, manager of the site. They were given a fascinating insight into the company in Schwaebisch Gmuend.

After a tour of the production halls and laboratories, the students had the unique opportunity to experience the process of pre-gilding at first hand and to have it explained to them. This allowed them to experience the fascinating world of electroplating up close and personal and, in the form of gold-plated bottle openers, they were also able to take something home with them straight away. At the end of the official part, Prof. Dr. Timo Soergel (Dean of Studies in the field of Materials for Sustainability and Course Coordinator for Surface Engineering) from Aalen University and Umicore trainer, provided information about training and study opportunities in surface engineering and chemistry. The joint lunch in the company's own canteen provided an opportunity for exchange and discussion.

‘The aim is to provide a platform for talented young people to discover and develop their passion for chemistry and technology. In the medium term, it is of course also about further strengthening the surface technology skills area in the Gmuend/Aalen region. We and the region need qualified young talent to keep and expand this industry of the future here,’ explains Barth, outlining the reasons behind the series of events.
