Experienced CEO appointed Chairman of Umeå Biotech Incubator

Urban Eriksson has been appointed Chairman of Umeå Biotech Incubator, bringing 30 years of leadership experience, notably as CEO of SLU Holding. He emphasizes the importance of bridging research and practical applications in life sciences for sustainable development.

Global push for medical vest that aims to enable cancer treatment for children

Umeå based Nil Medical has developed an ergonomic, medical vest for children undergoing cancer treatment, allowing for greater mobility by concealing IV equipment within the garment. The vest is being evaluated in a national quality of life study, in collaboration with Swedish healthcare. Nil Medical aims to introduce the CE-marked "Vestpack" to the international market.

New UBI Case Aims to Revolutionize Treatment of Cryptosporidiosis

Christian Hedberg, a professor at Umeå University, is developing a revolutionary drug to treat cryptosporidiosis in animals and humans. He collaborates with France's INRAE and the treatment has shown promising results in ruminant models and has the potential to address a significant global health issue. Christian Hedberg has joined Umeå Biotech Incubator to bring the treatment to the market.

Umeå is the cornerstone in the regional development projects "Life Science City" and "SOLH". Peter Jacobsson is Operations Coordinator at Umeå Biotech Incubator and Mats Falck is project leader for the SOLH project.

SEK 22 Million in EU funding elevates the Life Science sector in Umeå

Umeå secures 1.8 million (22 SEK million) in EU funding for life science projects to boost innovation and industry growth. The project "Life Science City" is run by Umeå Biotech Incubator and seeks to expand the sector and strengthen collaborations. The SOLH project is a joint effort between Västerbotten and Norrbotten aiming to streamline and unify the innovation system.

Mucocort, business supported by Umeå Biotech Incubator, will initiate a clinical trial of their intraoral patch. The clinical trial will be conducted in collaboration with Oral Care AB and the production is managed by Aurena Laboratories AB.

Mucocort initiates clinical trial of innovative patch for aphthous stomatitis

Mucocort AB has received approval to start a clinical trial for an intraoral patch (M045A) to treat aphthous stomatitis, a condition causing mouth ulcers. The patch aims for immediate pain relief and healing promotion. The trial will be conducted in collaboration with Oral Care AB and produced by Aurena Laboratories AB in Sweden.

New lab fair attracts 18 companies to Umeå

The Umeå Lab Fair, organized by Umeå Biotech Incubator, will take place on April 25th with 18 participating companies showcasing the latest developments in the life science industry. The new fair targets regional laboratory personnel and fills a gap in Umeå's event calendar. A Life Science Pub at Cinco will follow the fair, providing a networking opportunity for exhibitors and attendees.

New UCMR Directors focus on BSL-3 labs and clinical ties

Fredrik Almqvist and Marta Bally have been appointed as the new Directors of UCMR, the hub for microbial infection research at Umeå University. Their forward agenda includes enhancing collaboration with clinical research and establishing Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) labs for both in vitro and in vivo experiments.

Andreas Lindberg and Lisandro Bernardo from UBI are pleased with the response to Open up for Innovation. "We hoped for 50 participants, now we have double! We hope this will lead to a win-win for science, industry, and ultimately society".

Researchers and industry meet in Umeå to jointly drive life science innovations

Quality Assurance in Life science Umeå gets a boost from new network

The AstraZeneca Exchange Nordic mentorship program provides expert advice to Nordic life science startups and entrepreneurs. For Umeå Biotech Incubator (UBI) the program has proven to be an invaluable tool for the startups it coaches - offering a range of advice from market and needs analysis to more specific technical questions.

Assar Bäckman hangs up his lab coat and looks forward to retirement

He has been a vital part of Umeå Biotech Incubator (UBI) since its inception in 2003. But now, after 42 years of service in the biotech industry, it is time for respected research engineer Assar Bäckman to retire. “My work has been hugely varied, and over the years I have learned a great deal. I usually have an emergency solution to most things if needed”, says Assar.

The development project is being conducted av RISE in Örnsköldsvik. Daniel Pacurar, Boreal Orchards, and Frida Sandberg, research- and development engineer at RISE, look forward to the results.

New collaboration hopes to make the most out of moss

The Umeå Biotech Incubator-backed ‘Shades of Green’ project, developed by Boreal Orchards, has created a moss that can be used on buildings, infrastructure and for the regeneration of nature. Now founder Daniel Pacurar is collaborating on a new development project with RISE Processum AB and Ecohelix to maximize moss establishment with the help of by-products from the paper pulp industry.

Maria Sundell, senior consultant at Orderly People, starts working in Umeå after the summer. "It will be exciting to be able to offer my skills to local companies", she says.
