Stockport stroke survivors bring life to group’s new premises

A support group for stroke survivors in Stockport has brought new life to Kimberley Street Centre, by planting bulbs and seeds to brighten up the area for the local community.

Stockport Stroke Moving on Group moved to the new premises in June to utilise the larger space for their fortnightly meetings. The volunteer lead group provides regular social and peer support for those affected by stroke in the area, as well as advice and speakers.

The group is supported by the Stroke Association, and meets at the centre every other Monday from 1:30-3:30pm. The raised beds in front of the centre were previously overgrown and untidy, however volunteers from the group have worked hard to make the area more inspiring for visitors to the centre. The group is also now calling out for support from the local area and businesses to donate more bulbs and materials for the garden area.

Stroke Association Ambassador, Paul Edgerton, led the team of volunteers to plant the bulbs. He said: “We wanted to make the small garden and outdoor area more tidy and presentable, and hopefully turn it into a space our group members can enjoy. We’re also planning to lay down wood chip so that we can sit outside during the warmer months and eventually put up a sign to welcome visitors.”

Ruth Hunt, Information, Advice and Support Coordinator for the Stroke Association, added: “The garden area at the centre will help stroke survivors gain satisfaction by growing their own bulbs and seeds, as well as providing a colourful welcome. Meeting regularly at the group helps them to interact with others to improve confidence and reduce social isolation.

“In addition to signposting to the Stockport Stroke Moving on Group, our information, advice and support service provides stroke survivors, families and carers with information, emotional support and practical assistance in the aftermath of a stroke. We work closely with individuals and families to help them come to terms with the prospect of life after stroke. Our services are available to anyone in the Stockport area who has been affected by stroke.”

The Stroke Association runs an Information, Advice and Support Service and Communication Support in Stockport in partnership with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and Stockport Clinical Commissioning Group.
