Press release -

Ripley St Thomas pupils give a hand on World Stroke Day

Charitable pupils at Ripley St Thomas have been ‘giving a hand’ to the Stroke Association this week, to help raise awareness of stroke.

Year 8 children at the school on Ashton Rd, Lancaster, have been supporting the Stroke Association’s fundraising initiative ‘Give a Hand’. The campaign will see people across the UK complete an everyday activity using the hand they wouldn’t normally use, from 26 October to 01 November 2015.

For the past week, pupils have been writing, packing their bags and undertaking every day activities using their non-dominant hands. The week culminated in an awareness raising assembly, with staff from the Stroke Association educating Year 8 pupils about stroke prevention and its effects.

Nikki Chadwick, Life After Stroke Co-ordinator at the Stroke Association, said: “A stroke strikes in an instant but its effects can last a lifetime. Three quarters of stroke survivors lose the use of one of their hands. Often people affected by stroke have to re-learn to do the things they’ve always done – using their other hand. The Stroke Association supports people through this rehabilitation.

“It’s been fantastic to see pupils at Ripley St Thomas getting into the spirit of ‘Give a Hand. It just goes to show that you’re never too young to show your support. We’re calling on even more people to ‘Give a Hand’ this October and raise funds by completing a task, or several, using their ‘other’ hand. By taking part doing your bit for the Stroke Association, we can help more people to conquer stroke.”
