Hundreds of students attend second Rochdale Skills Event

More than 1,500 young people attended the second Rochdale Skills Event, designed to introduce them to the world of work and prepare them for the job market.

Around 25 employers from Oldham and Rochdale, including Oldham Coliseum, Nissan, Rochdale Hornets Rugby club and Veenas restaurant were on hand to offer the year nine youngsters a series of challenges designed to introduce them to the world of work.

They were challenged to construct a suspension bridge against the clock, cook up a storm in the kitchen with leading chefs and create designs with cutting edge software.

Councillor Colin Lambert said “After a successful first event last year, we wanted to make the second even bigger and better. We’ve received some fantastic feedback from exhibitors, who were really impressed with the enthusiasm of everybody that attended and many already asking to sign up for next year.

“There was lots of talk on Facebook and Twitter on Wednesday night with the students saying things like, ‘learnt a lot’ and ‘Thanks for the amazing experience’. It’s great to hear direct from the people that attended and I wish them all well for their future careers.”
