Press release -

PRCA REEB reacts to rioting and violence

The PRCA Race and Ethnicity Equity Board (REEB), on behalf of everyone at PRCA, condemns the rioting, looting, and other organised attacks that are being led by White far-right extremists across the UK to fuel fear, hatred, and intimidation against people of colour, especially Muslims and refugees.

This level of violence is not about seeking justice but serves as a catalyst to cause the maximum damage and affliction to Black, Asian and other ethnically minoritised communities, and their places of worship. Much of the violence has been whipped up, and fuelled by deliberate mis- and disinformation, particularly on social media.

REEB prides itself on being industry leaders who make a stand for racial diversity, equality, equity and inclusion in partnership with allies. We want to repeat that there is no room for Islamophobia, racism, fascism, and misogyny - or any other form of hatred - in our industry or society. We stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our Muslim, and ethnically minoritised friends and colleagues.

Guidance for allies:

Here's what we advise:

  • Check-in with your Muslim, Black, Asian and ethnically minoritised employees who may be fearing for their safety and are negatively affected in this current climate.
  • Where appropriate, give them an option to work from home.
  • Help to amplify the voices of those impacted and help them make a stand against far-right activity in your workplace networks.
  • Create safe spaces where people can have a moment to breathe as focusing on work activities might be difficult right now.
  • When systemic racism is criticised, and uncomfortable conversations are taking place around race, remember it's about structural racism and not about you.
  • Conversations around equality, equity, diversity and inclusion are everyone’s responsibility. If you are a leader in the workplace, it is worth noting that some of the best teachings can come directly from your colleagues from ethnically minoritised groups who have life experiences that can't be taught - so listen to what they have to say and encourage their input in setting out messages and content around EDI.
