Keep These Water Safety Tips in Mind for a Happy and Safe Summer

As the summer holidays approach, it can be tempted to enjoy a dip in a river or loch. To help reduce risk, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have put together some useful advice about what you can do to stay safe around water.

Remember:

  • Be cautious around rivers, lochs, lakes & the sea. Never underestimate the current, temp or depth - and keep in mind that hidden objects or currents could be hidden out of sight.
  • Never get into the water alone or in areas such as lochs, ponds, rivers or the sea where there isn't someone around to help.

The water in Scotland can become very cold just a few feet under the surface, even in summer months. This can cause cramps or Cold Water Shock. Very cold temperatures can also affect your stamina. You may find your strength and ability to swim becomes difficult quickly. You might also tire quicker than you would in a heated pool.

Let's keep these tips in mind and help everyone enjoy a safe and happy summer!
