Press release -

Mondelez and Saica join forces to launch paper-based multipack bags for Cadbury biscuits in the UK

  • The new paper packaging solution can be included within UK household recycling collections, reducing approximately 145 tonnes of virgin plastic use.
  • The move is part of the UK business’ ongoing efforts to pack ‘light and right’ in service of its global sustainable packaging goals.

Earlier this year Mondelēz International moved to a new, paper-based packaging outer multipack bag for its Cadbury biscuits range. Working in partnership with Saica Group, the new packaging is designed to be recyclable and can be included within UK household recycling collections, reducing the use of approximately 145 tonnes of virgin plastic. The product has been developed to meet the sustainability standards set by the Confederation of European Paper (CEPI).

This initiative is part of Mondelez International’s ongoing efforts to pack ‘light and right’ in service of its global sustainable packaging goals. By 2025 the company aims to reduce virgin plastic in rigid plastic by at least 25% and in all plastic packaging by 5%. Mondelez has already reduced packaging materials by 72,600 metric tonnes at the end of 2022 and aims to make 98% of packaging designed to be recyclable by 2025.

Like Mondelez, Saica Group is fully committed to the transition towards a circular economy. To do this, Saica has set a series of ambitious targets in resource efficiency, circularity of materials, climate neutrality, and zero littering, among others.

“We believe that packaging sustainability is a very serious challenge that requires our full commitment and far-reaching collaborations with companies equally committed, like Mondelez,” said Miguel Angel Dora, General Manager at Saica Flex.

Mondelez International continues to make meaningful strides in the evolution of its packaging material. As of the end 2023 approximately 96% of packaging is designed to be recyclable and the company is on track to achieve its 2025 goal of 5% reduction vs 2020 levels of virgin plastic use and are set to see progress in the year ahead in line with expectations.
