Local primary and secondary schools display climate-inspired wheelbarrows at BBC Gardeners’ World Live

Visitors to last week’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live and Good Food Show Summer were treated to an impressive display of planted up wheelbarrows, created by nursery, primary and secondary school children from across the region, throughout the four-day event.

The annual School Wheelbarrow Competition is an initiative by Health for Life, a programme that encourages children and their families to adopt healthy lifestyles. Inspiring children to cook their own food and grow their own vegetables, Health for Life is funded by Mondelēz International and delivered by The Conservation Volunteers and Services For Education in Birmingham.

Now in its eighth year, the competition is a fun way to get school children interested in growing their own produce, with children being tasked to get creative with creating their own wheelbarrows. This year, the concept was climate mitigation, encouraging pupils to think about how environmental changes affect food production, both globally and at a local level.

Lucinda Anderton, Higher Level Teaching Assistant at Nonsuch Primary in Wood Leasow, Birmingham, said: “Our gardening club pupils have really engaged with the competition this year and we have been thrilled to see the progress of their seedlings in our growing tower, which have been transferred into the wheelbarrows, ready for BBC Gardeners’ World Live.

“It's been rewarding seeing the children learn about the important implications of climate change on food production, as well as their enthusiasm for the project.

Kelly Farrell, Corporate and Government Affairs Manager at Mondelēz International, added: "Our long-term commitment to funding Health for Life continues to have a positive impact across our local communities and particularly within participating schools. The dedication and effort put into producing these wheelbarrows, along with the enthusiasm for other Health for Life activities within the programme, demonstrates that the next generation are passionate not only about healthy lifestyles but also the effects of climate change.

Renowned for famous faces, stunning gardens, foodie inspiration, shopping and so much more, BBC Gardeners’ World Live and Good Food Show Summer welcome more than 90,000 visitors across both shows every year. With two shows included in one ticket, it’s a great value day out for all.
