Peter Fitzboydon announces decision to stand down as Chief Executive of London Sport

Peter Fitzboydon, the Chief Executive of London Sport, has announced his decision to stand down from London Sport to take up a new role as Managing Director of Parkwood Leisure. 

Peter will leave London Sport in the coming months, with the Board of London Sport intending to begin the search for his successor shortly.

Commenting on his decision to step down, Peter Fitzboydon said:

“The decision to leave London Sport has been a truly difficult one. Serving as the organisation’s first Chief Executive has been a genuine privilege, and I am proud of all that we have achieved in the past three years. I am grateful for the constant support I have received from the Board and the team at London Sport throughout my tenure, and I am excited to continue to watch the organisation’s progress from afar.

“This is an exciting time for London Sport, and I feel confident that the team will continue to make great strides towards getting 1,000,000 Londoners more active by 2020. I now look forward to working with the Board to support the process of identifying my successor, and to continuing to support the organisation’s work in the coming months.”

London Sport Vice-Chair, Richard Barker, said:

“We are sorry to see Peter depart, but recognise and accept his reasons for taking on a new challenge with Parkwood Leisure. Since his appointment, Peter has been a superb advocate for physical activity and sport in London, and much of the success enjoyed by London Sport to date has been as a direct consequence of his vision and leadership. I, and the whole of the London Sport Board, offer our profound thanks to Peter for his dedication in the past three years, and wish him the greatest of successes in the next stage of his career.

“We are confident that, in seeking Peter’s successor, we will attract a strong field of high-calibre candidates for what is one of the most exciting senior executive roles in sport in London. We will shortly commence this process and will issue a further announcement in due course.”

Since his appointment as the first ever Chief Executive of London Sport in 2014, Peter has successfully delivered a transformation of the organisation, leading to efficiency savings of more than £0.5m annually, increasing the amount of funding available to grassroots sport in London, as well as establishing the organisation as thought leaders on technology, open data and increasing collaboration with a broad base of sector stakeholders.

During Peter’s tenure, London Sport has taken considerable steps towards its initial target of getting 1,000,000 Londoners more active by 2020, with the most recent data showing an increase in activity levels among more than 200,000 Londoners since 2014.
