The freezing temperatures and snowy conditions that are currently causing chaos throughout the UK this week have caused major problems across the North-East of England, forcing public transport services off the roads and creating mayhem for shop workers in Newcastle’s city centre.

Travelling from neighbouring towns Consett and Stanley, two members of staff were forced to walk to work. The outdoor specialist shop's co-owner Roddy Mackay, 43, of Gosforth, Newcastle, said: “Yesterday morning conditions were so bad that there were no buses so they all walked in”.

Mr Sheddon, 55, from Consett, said the 15 mile walk took him three-and-a-half hours. “There was heavy snow at times and obviously a lot under foot, but it was also quite pretty. I do a lot of outdoor stuff so it wasn't as big a deal for me as for some people.”

As many commuters have struggled and failed to get to work, staff at the LD Mountain Centre have shown their commitment by using specialist sleeping bags and camping equipment from their very own stock to stay in the store overnight.
