Reflective cover makes cyclists more visible on the roads

As the summer comes to an end, darkness quickly descends on our streets and cycle paths, making it vital to be seen by other road users. Hövding, the Swedish firm behind the acclaimed airbag for cyclists, is taking reflectors to a whole new level. The Airbag Inside cover is the autumn favourite that increases visibility on the roads.

“The main reason people wear a Hövding is because they are safety-conscious, but many also want to be able to express their own personal style. The reflective cover offers that individual look while also serving a smart function. Different covers make it easy to change up your Hövding to reflect the season and your mood,” says Stina Malmros, Pattern Technician at Hövding, who works on developing the covers.

The cover bearing the text Airbag Inside is made of a highly reflective fabric decorated with a graphic print. At night, the cover acts as a gleaming reflector.

Hövding is a discreet collar that the cyclist wears around their neck, where it checks the cyclist’s movements 200 times a second. The collar contains an airbag that instantly inflates in an accident to protect your head and neck. The deployment mechanism is controlled using sensors that detect the abnormal movement of the cyclist.

Hövding - Airbag for cyclists

Hövding started out in 2005 as a master’s thesis by the two founders Anna Haupt and Terese Alstin, who, at the time, were studying Industrial Design at the University of Lund.

The project resulted in the concept of an airbag helmet, which won Innovationsbron’s Ideas Grant. This kick-started the process of developing Hövding into a real product. In 2006 Hövding won the Venture Cup, after which Hövding Sweden AB was founded.

Over the years Hövding has grown from just two people with a great idea, to a NASDAQ-listed company that handle everything from development and production to marketing and sales. Today Hövding consists of a team of around 30 people, all triggered by the word impossible, and Hövding’s airbag for cyclists is available in 16 markets across Europe.

The headquarters are located in an old chocolate factory in Malmö – the sixth greatest cycling city in the world. Final assembly of Hövding is carried out in association with the Japanese Company Nihon Plast.
