Nordic Re-Finance Trains across Scandinavia to benefit from new on-board signalling technology ERTMS+STM delivered by Hitachi Rail

  • Hitachi Rail will roll out European standard ERTMS on-board technology to Nordic Re-Finance’s Scandinavian train fleet
  • Introduction of Hitachi’s leading technology continues firm’s support for modernisation and digitisation of Scandanvia’s railways

Hitachi Rail has been awarded a new contract by Nordic Re-Finance to upgrade the signalling systems of the TMe fleet of locomotives operating in Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

The work has already started and the train fleet equipped with the new signalling system is expected to run across the Nordic region to connect passengers and vital good and supplies by early 2023.

Given the pressures on international supply chains following the global pandemic, this digital enhancement of trains helps protect the continuity of goods for consumers and businesses across Sweden, Norway and Demark.

The ERTMS technology is a key enabler and a backbone for the transition towards the digitalisation and decarbonisation of rail transport. By fitting the latest ERTMS technology to Nordic Re-Finance’s TMe fleet, Hitachi Rail will help its client make operations more efficient and reliable by reducing traffic disruption and delays for passengers and freight traffic, while guaranteeing the highest level of safety and availability.

Eric Morand, Vice President, Nordic Region said:

We are honoured to receive the order to upgrade and deliver the latest on-board digital train control solution to Nordic Re Finance’s fleet of TMe locomotives.

The partnership is an outstanding opportunity for Hitachi Rail to support Nordic Re Finance in the development of an innovative and more sustainable solution with high standards of quality, safety and reliability for their customers in the region. The digitisation of their locomotives will help improve the supply of goods across Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

The scope of the contract will see Hitachi Rail provide ERTMS and Specific Transmission Module systems [base line 3.6] and related equipment to upgrade 27 TMe locomotives that operate in Scandinavia.

Notes to editors:

  • ERTMS stands for European Railway Traffic Management System. Hitachi Rail’s ERTMS solutions have been introduced and operate on major railway networks around the world, from Europe to Asia, Africa and Middle East, as well as from conventional lines to commuters and high-speed networks. In 2017, the release of the ERTMS Baseline 3 release 2 set of specifications (also called base line 3.6), marked a major step forward for the ERTMS European Deployment plan (EDP) as this release represents a mature and stable version of the system, able to solve any interoperability issues.
  • STM stands for Specific Transmission Module and is an interface between the European Vital Computer for communication with the legacy class B ATP system.
  • TMe is the littera for the diesel-electric locos owned by Nordic Re-Finance.
